The Parish of Tyendinaga in the Diocese of Ontario is excited to announce that they are seeking a new incumbent.
Located between Belleville and Napanee, Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory is the homeland of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte who have inhabited the area for over 230 years. The Mohawks converted to Christianity and became loyal members of the Anglican Church of Canada.
Tyendinaga is a diverse parish that draws parishioners only from the Territory but also, Belleville, Shannonville, Deseronto, and Marysville. Being an Indigenous parish situated on First Nation territory, the incumbent would ideally have experience or affiliation with Indigenous people. With funding in place to help restore Mohawk language and culture, the incumbent would also be expected to learn and grow in the language, using key phrases in Mohawk in the service.
The vision of Tyendinaga is to be a Spirit-filled and life-giving parish community where strangers become friends and friends become disciples in the mission of Jesus Christ. The parish celebrates all that God has done for them through worship and witness; they respond to their call to be disciples by sharing their faith; seeking to practice good stewardship of human, financial and environmental resources; and reaching into the community through generous caring, giving and welcoming.
Sunday offers one 9:30 am service and is conducted alternately using both the Book of Alternative Services and the Book of Common Prayer. Music is a priority for the parish and hymns are selected by the priest and sung with organ accompaniment.
The parish hosts a very active and engaged social committee, ACW and altar guild. Parishioner led ministries include a vibrant prayer quilt ministry along with rich fellowship gatherings involving festivals and shared meals. The congregation also regularly attends events hosted by other denominations. With the important of promoting Mohawk language and culture, the parish actively hosts events on Mohawk history, religion and culture and continues to emphasize language revitalization.
The opportunity to serve as incumbent at Tyendinaga offers a unique challenge for an energetic clergyperson with vision—working alongside a team of dedicated and talented individuals with a strong commitment to their church.
