The Anglican Communion in central and eastern Quebec
Incumbent, Parish of Gaspé
The Diocese of Quebec is seeking a full-time priest to serve as incumbent of the Parish of Gaspé.
Centred in the scenic town of Gaspé, nestled between the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the Chic-Choc Mountains, the parish seeks a priest to both minister with the existing members and also explore new ways to engage with the wider community in the service of God’s mission.
This family-sized parish worships as a single community and typically rotates services at different times of the year among five historic church buildings, each within a 20-minute drive of a spacious rectory, which is currently fully furnished.
Like many parishes in this diocese, the majority of members are faithful and committed seniors. At the same time there is a desire for the church to connect with younger adults, children and youth. The Gaspé region has recently experienced a modest but notable population increase, including young families moving to the area. Some capacity in the French language—or a commitment to become conversant in French—is important to serving and living fully in this context. A dedicated deacon in the neighbouring parish provides chaplaincy to English-speaking seniors receiving long-term care in the town of Gaspé.
The incumbent of the Parish of Gaspé would join a small but committed team of diocesan clergy and lay leaders seeking to reimagine in this secular age what it means to cultivate a vibrant and sustainable Anglican Christian presence in eastern and central Quebec. Some of our guiding principles in this respect include: supporting the least, the last, and the lost in our midst; building effective partnerships; nurturing our people; and practicing faithful stewardship of our people, environment, infrastructure, and money.
The town of Gaspé has several amenities, including a hospital, bilingual community college, and regional airport. A ski hill and beautiful national parks are close by. The region’s cultural offerings and natural beauty—which include Percé Rock, bird sanctuaries, and the only woodland caribou herd outside of the Arctic—attract tens of thousands of visitors each year.
The Diocese of Quebec’s stipend and benefits package includes generous provisions for annual study leave. This appointment is available as of January 1, 2022, although a later start date is negotiable.
