Church of the Redeemer, Bloor Street

Church of the Redeemer – Associate Priest

The Church of the Redeemer is a large, active Anglican community at the crossroads of Avenue Road and Bloor Street in downtown Toronto. We share this corner with the University of Toronto, the Royal Ontario Museum, retail and corporate businesses, hotels and condo dwellings. Our parishioners gather from the four corners of Toronto and beyond to serve the mission of God in the heart of the city.  Vibrant worship, outreach to the marginalized and under housed, Refugee Settlement, Indigenous Solidarity, adult Christian faith exploration, and Youth and Children’s ministry are just a few of the ways through which we gather and minister.

The Church of the Redeemer seeks a full-time Associate Priest. We are looking for a candidate who has been ordained in the Anglican Church of Canada or comes to us from one of our Anglican Communion partners. We are interested in working with someone who thrives in a collaborative multidisciplinary team setting. This individual will report to the Incumbent and work with all staff, ministry leaders, and volunteers in carrying out the church’s mission, but will also be encouraged and supported in leading their own ministry initiatives. While the primary role of the Associate is Pastoral Care and engagement with Redeemer’s committees and ministries, we desire a leader who will preach, preside, and teach – as their gifts, skills and time allow.  A more detailed role description is offered below.

The role focuses on four key areas (the percentages show the emphasis of each ministry and are not necessarily an indication of time allocation):

Pastoral Ministry: 30%
Lead and nurture Redeemer’s Pastoral Care Team and ministry. Share in the care of parishioners: hospital and home visits, crisis and grief support. Share the ministry and leadership of weddings, funerals, and baptisms.

Ministry Engagement and Support: 30%
Assist the incumbent in engaging, supporting, and working with the church’s ministries. Support and encourage ministry leaders, staff, and volunteers. Foster deeper connections and synergies between church program offerings.  Lead Catechesis and journey with those who seek to deepen their faith commitment.  Offer their gifts in ministry to the wider church and/or community (e.g., joining a diocesan committee, community board, etc.)

Liturgy & Prayer: 30%
Preach and preside at Sunday and mid-week Eucharists, as well as other liturgies within the church (e.g., Sunday Evening Services, Garden Eucharists) and beyond the Redeemer (e.g., Christie Gardens and Hazelton Place.) Participate in the development, design and implementation of weekly liturgies with the staff and lay leaders.

Children, Youth and Family Ministry: 10%
Support and liaise with our Minster for Children, Youth, and Families in cultivating the ministry of faith exploration, education and the work of the growing Church School and Youth community. Offer pastoral support and encourage Christian formation of families, volunteers, and leaders.

Skills and Gifts:

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has the heart of a pastor and the skills of a motivator and administrator.
  • Is a talented leader with proven ability to connect with and relate well to a diverse community of children, youth, adults, and seniors.
  • Demonstrates a passion for the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the ministry of the laity.
  • Has great communication skills; writing, preaching, and teaching.
  • Is adaptable to changing ministry needs and can serve a theologically diverse community.

Application process
Please prepare the following:

  • Cover Letter: a 200/250-word statement describing how you believe your gifts and skills align with this ministry position.
  • Resume: listing all relevant experience.
  • A manuscript or link to a recording (internet link or mp3 file) of a sermon that was preached in worship, including the date of the event.
