Summer Student — support and analyze remote communities

Website Diocese of Athabasca

Full time employment June to August.

The Diocese of Athabasca is seeking to pursue the family of Christ, the Kingdom of God, in all areas of its diocese.  We are seeking to love by pursuing what is healthiest, for our people, for our communities, and for all who inhabit our area.  Taking care of yourself and others in the community is a core tenant of our faith.

We are seeking three students who are feeling called to ordained ministry (as priest or deacon) to join us this summer to worship with us and do a situation analysis of a few remote communities.   Studying the situation on the ground, learning of existing resources, and identifying further initiatives which could assist in promoting the health of the communities are in the scope of this project.

Working with local community leadership, the students will:

  • If possible, trial local-based initiatives to promote healing and health;
  • Provide in-situ pastoral care and counselling as required;
  • Provide weekly worship support for the local community;
  • Prepare reports documenting their Situation Appraisal, Definition of Need, Local Collaborators and Leadership, Initiatives Trialed, Results Found, and Recommendations;
  • Present reports to the local diocesan bishop and the students’ university.  The report should identify the healthiest methods to address community social and theological needs.

We exist to experience and share the love of Christ, to all people and in all circumstances, so that the Family of Christ, the Kingdom of God, is further established.  This project helps us to identify and pursue initiatives to bring increasing health across our remote and indigenous communities, having them lead us in ways of empowering individual and communal lives to mutual benefit. We believe the Kingdom of God is embodied by the concept of Shalom: peace, harmony, wholeness, completeness, prosperity, wellness, and tranquility. As such, implementing initiatives to pursue these elements is core to our identity.

Students will be mentored by in-place personnel as well as having regional oversight.
