Website Diocese of Rupert's Land
Executive Summary
Holy Trinity Anglican Church – Sanctuary for the City – located in downtown Winnipeg, Manitoba, at 256 Smith Street, stands on Treaty 1 lands. These are the traditional lands of the Anishinaabeg, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota, and Dene Peoples, and the homeland of the Metis Nation. We are grateful for their stewardship of this land, for the gift of water from Shoal Lake 40, and for their hospitality which allows us to live, work, serve, and worship God the Creator here.
Built in 1884, the church is a municipally designated historic site and designated National Historic Site of Canada. The church seeks a full-time rector to serve a congregation of Indigenous and ethnically diverse people who reside in the downtown area as well as the suburbs of Winnipeg. The church strives to show God’s love for the world by offering warmth, hospitality, care, and support to the needy; from coffee time and fellowship after Sunday services, to providing lunch for the hungry and homeless during the week.
Holy Trinity worships in the traditional format of Anglican Liturgy for Holy Eucharist, following the Book of Alternative Services. The Book of Common Prayer is used at the mid-week noon service with said liturgy. Traditional music is the foundation of Sunday services, playing the Casavant Organ to the pride and joy of the congregation. In addition to traditional hymns using primarily the Common Praise, Anglican Church of Canada Hymnal, there is space to include contemporary pieces.
Living in community is an important value. We believe we are all children of the living God.
Holy Trinity seeks a rector who is not daunted by the challenges of a small congregation (regular Sunday attendance of 40 – 60 persons), a demographic of mainly older adults, financial challenges, and a church building in need of significant structural work. As the first phase Feasibility Study to assess the structural integrity of the church is currently underway, Holy Trinity seeks someone who will, with the congregation, develop a plan for the future of what the church wants to be as a place of worship and “sanctuary in the city”.
We are looking for an incumbent who, in addition to carrying out their priestly duties to nurture the parish, is not afraid to engage in community and with different levels of government, to forge new working relationships in serving the neighbourhood in which we are located. We seek a rector who will see the challenges that lie before us as opportunities to make possibilities become a reality for the benefit of God’s children. As such, the church seeks someone who will bring stability to the church community.
As Winnipeg undergoes projects to revitalize and bring life to the downtown, there is opportunity for the new incumbent to re-energize and grow the congregation as we live out Christ’s mission on earth.
