The Diocese of Yukon invites applications for the full-time position of Rector of Christ Church Cathedral, Whitehorse, Yukon.

Mission statement: Christ Church Cathedral is an open church rooted in Christ Jesus, where there is always room for one and many more.

About Christ Church Cathedral

Christ Church Cathedral is located in Whitehorse, Yukon, the traditional territory of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation and the Ta’an Kwäch’än Council, both self-governing First Nations. Whitehorse is located about 2 hours north of Vancouver by plane, or about 1,990 km north-west of Edmonton by car. Whitehorse is also the administrative center of the territory and the Diocese, with the Diocesan office located within the Cathedral building. This location, as an urban parish in a remote location, heavily impacts the Cathedral in everything from access to services such as internet to parish demographics and finances. The cathedral sees visitors throughout the year. In the summer, it is not uncommon to have tourists visit, while throughout the year, people visiting from communities across the Yukon and northern BC come to the Cathedral while in Whitehorse. The Cathedral also has both a small, but growing, group of parishioners who attend and give regularly, along with a wider community of people who may attend the Cathedral throughout the year or for events/programs.

The Cathedral offers a 10:00 AM Sunday service from the Book of Alternative Service. On the fifth Sunday, the Cathedral joins Trinity Lutheran Church for a joint service, with the choice of which church is used rotating. A service is also offered at the Church in Carcross once a month at 2:00 PM. This position requires driving, so the successful applicant will need a valid driver’s license.

The parish hosts many ministries, including an ACW, common threads, a prayer shawl ministry, a keep-fit program, men’s chat (Zoom), pastoral care, and Sunday school. The parish is also part of several ecumenical programs, including men’s breakfast, Braeburn summer camp, and the ecumenical Christmas choir. The parish hall is rented out to various user groups throughout the year, including AA.

About the position

The position offers the unique opportunity to be the incumbent of a Cathedral in the north. As we are a small Diocese, there are many opportunities to get involved in Diocesan work, along with the potential to travel to Synod. This role will require the incumbent to be able to work with the parish, ecumenical partners, and the new Bishop. The Cathedral is seeking an incumbent who can spiritually lead the Cathedral in these changing times in the wilderness city of Whitehorse.

This position offers a stipend and a housing allowance. The stipend portion is based on the year of ordination. A rectory apartment has been newly renovated and is available for the incumbent. A comprehensive benefits package is also available, including vacation and sick leave, pension, medical, and dental coverage.
