Term: 1 year indefinite with working notice.

Role Summary

The Director of Legacy Giving leads a national, donor-centered legacy giving ministry on behalf of three related Anglican entities: General Synod of the Anglican Church of Canada, the Anglican Foundation of Canada, and Alongside Hope. Appointed by and reporting to the Primate, the Director will work closely with and have a secondary but stated level of accountability to an advisory group representing the Anglican Foundation, Alongside Hope and the Anglican Church including bishops, clergy and laity. The Director develops and stewards relationships with donors considering gifts through wills, insurance, donor-advised funds, beneficiary designations, securities, and other planned giving vehicles.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and implement annual and multi‑year legacy giving strategies on behalf of the related entities of the Anglican Church of Canada.
• Set and monitor annual targets and benchmarks in consultation with the related Anglican entities.
• Incorporate a wide range of giving options including bequests, gifts of securities, gifts of insurance, Donor Advised Funds and other planned giving vehicles into legacy giving strategies.
• Work with Marketing and Communications teams to develop and plan the execution of all legacy and marketing print and digital materials.
• Develop a pipeline of planned giving prospects
• Manage a personal portfolio of prospective and confirmed legacy donors, with input from the three related Anglican entities.
• Conduct one-on-one visits, make virtual visits and phone calls, and maintain email correspondence with prospective legacy donors.
• Provide recommendations for appropriate beneficiaries among the related Anglican entities, based on the donor’s intent.
• Identify a network of financial planners who can be available to donors in person or virtually. Build further relationships with estate lawyers, insurance specialists, and other professional advisors.
• Support estate administration with executors and advisors, ensuring donor intent and CRA compliance.
• Develop a workplan for accountability to the joint steering group and organizational teams to ensure unified donor experience and consistent stewardship.
• Provide direction to a legacy giving associate staff position, and communicate regarding moves management, donor communications, and donation expectancies and tracking.

Qualifications

• Deep familiarity with and commitment to the structure, culture, and ministries of the Anglican Church of Canada, including the ability to navigate relationships across dioceses, parishes, and national partners.
• Well-established relational connections within the Anglican Church of Canada are strongly preferred, as the role depends on trusted pastoral relationships with donors, clergy, and lay leaders across the country.
• Demonstrated understanding of the missions and charitable purposes of the Anglican Church of Canada (General Synod), the Anglican Foundation of Canada, and Alongside Hope.
• Significant experience and demonstrated success in planned giving, major gifts fundraising, or senior church leadership involving stewardship, donor relationships, and legacy giving.
• Familiarity with Canadian wills, estates, and planned giving vehicles, including Canadian tax and estate laws related to charitable giving.
• Integrity and discretion in handling sensitive financial/personal information.
• Experience integrating theology and philanthropy.
• Ability to work in a multi-layered organization with multiple stakeholders.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Bilingualism (English/French) would be an asset

Work Model

This is a 0.5 FTE employee role, based in Toronto or elsewhere within Canada, preferably within a Diocesan office with occasional travel for donor visits and Anglican gatherings. Some evening or weekend commitments may arise depending on donor and church activities.

The Director of Legacy Giving prepares quarterly reports to the Primate, to the Legacy Giving Advisory Panel and to others as recommended by the Primate.

The Director of Legacy Giving will manage an annual budget to facilitate travel, to produce a limited number of printed resources and to engage a network of financial advisors.

The term of employment will be 1 year from the start date, for an indeterminate time with working notice. The position does not include pension or health benefits. The employee will be responsible for their own employment tax deductions.
