The Bishop of The Arctic is seeking to appoint a Priest-in-Charge of the Cathedral Parish in Iqaluit, Nunavut.  This is a 2-year mission-focused term appointment.

Our mission is to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ and to enable all Christians for ministry.  We’re humbly accepting that we need a faithful, visionary leader who can call us back to that mission, for the good of our city.  We have an incredible inheritance in the Lord – not just people, buildings, and land, but a unique place and trust in our community – and as Jesus teaches, it is time for us to dig that gold out of the ground and invest it boldly before we pass it on to the next generation.

The Cathedral parish is located in the dynamic capital city of Iqaluit, which is the center of government and the hub of sports, music, and healthcare for Nunavut.  The parish includes the unique igloo-shaped Cathedral in the heart of Iqaluit’s downtown (with adjacent parish hall and office/residence building), as well as St. Simon’s Church over the hill in Apex.

The Cathedral currently finds itself ready to grow and trust God together under the leadership of a new priest-in-charge.  We are in agreement that we need help to re-focus our mission and ministry; with most Inuit considering themselves members, we can do as many as 3 or 4 funerals in a week, which has brought us to the point where many only see St. Jude’s Cathedral as a place to mourn and grieve.  With some retirements, moves, and some elders going to be with the Lord, it is now time to raise up and engage a new generation of leaders. Change is always hard, but that is part of the reason why the Bishop is advertising this as a 2-year term to start; if you feel called to help us bring about that missional change and learn to focus on those not-yet in church on Sundays, this is the place for you!

The Cathedral has 3 distinct congregations: an English congregation of about 20, an Inuktitut morning congregation of about 75, and an Inuktitut evening (prayer & praise) congregation of about 50; St. Simon’s in Apex offers a Sunday evening Sunday School program when volunteers are available, but doesn’t have a regular worshipping community at this time.  One united vestry works together to provide oversight.

A missionary priest called to Iqaluit will need to be a very good listener and a fast learner; we won’t expect you to be fluent in Inuktitut, but you’ll need to work hard to pick up important phrases and to lead parts of the service in the language of the people.  Just as important, you’ll need to be the sort of person who can help us navigate the necessary change in a cross-cultural sort of way; Inuit ways of knowing (Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit) mean we won’t be impressed or convinced with a “strategic plan” because it was printed in a book with a nice cover and good reviews.  Inuit culture is an outcome-based culture and we work on consensus; it takes openness and patience to come to agreement about where we are headed and why, and then we can work together to get there.  For non-Inuit, we will expect that your English-language skills are top-notch, as so many of those to whom you will minister in their second language face so much of a language barrier to begin with.

There are some quick and easy “wins” that have already been identified, such as helping us re-think the entry area and the rear of the cathedral sanctuary to allow for a time of bilingual fellowship between the English and Inuktitut services (without requiring a trek over to the parish hall), and relocating the office to the cathedral building to allow for the building to be opened to visitors and parishioners throughout the week.  The Diocesan Bishop (based in Yellowknife) would like to see the daily office recited in the Cathedral, and if the Cathedral were to set up a good Inuktitut-language live-stream of services, we know it would be a big support to the Inuit communities without local clergy, to supplement the Anglican local radio station that is already run from the Cathedral.

The Priest-in-Charge is supported by a part-time Office Administrator position, a yet-to-be-hired Curate/Assisting Priest position, a bilingual Suffragan Bishop who is resident in Iqaluit and can assist sacramentally as required, two non-stipendiary Deacons (Inuk and English), and a team of experienced and dedicated Inuktitut-speaking lay leaders.

The Cathedral is not currently a self-supporting congregation, so this position falls under the Clergy Support Grant structure of the Diocese, with annual goal-setting and reporting to help remember that “the mission matters most”; the building and administration can take so much attention, but we must continually remind ourselves that we exist to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ and enable all Christians for ministry.

We will not be sponsoring immigration or overseas moving expenses for this initial 2-year term missionary appointment. We are accepting applications from those who already hold permission to work and reside in Canada, or someone who feels called to an “intentional interim” 2-year term who is willing to work on a “religious worker” visa without the possibility of immigration sponsorship.  The successful applicant may be elected to the position of Rector and/or appointed Dean of The Arctic after completion of the initial term.
